Daily Calendar: SYTYC-Kids Can Do

So even though I didn't make it to the next round, I already had my KIDS CAN DO craft ready to go. I'm going to share it with you today as well as ALL THE PRINTABLES needed to make your own! See the bottom of the post for the links to the printables.
I had so many ideas for this weeks challenge... In the end I decided on a project that I had been meaning to make for awhile. I love the idea of having a calendar for kids to learn days, months, numbers, weather, seasons, and even appropriate clothing choices! Here's what I came up with...
Photobucket
The Base is laminated paper and all the removable pieces are also laminated. This baby should last awhile! I created printables for all these pieces so it can be recreated again if I want to make more of them.
Photobucket
I put "Good Morning" greetings from around the world at the top.
Photobucket
Each day, month, date, weather, and piece of clothing is attachable with a magnet to the board.
Photobucket
Clear pockets on the front of the board hold the spare pieces in clear pockets for easy finding and placing.
Photobucket
Looks like we need to start with how to recognize words right side up before we move onto days of the week! Umm, yep... I do know that Friday is not October 20th... noticed this after the photoshoot, opps!

Busy Bees: Simple Costume Tutorial

People don't trick or treat here in Hong Kong, but we were invited to a costume party last week. It was a first for my boys, so I was excited to make them something cute!

I came up with this simple bee costume, it was easy to sew (around 2 hours for both start to finish) and fun as well.
Isn't he the cutest bee ever?!

I had to get a picture of us all together, of course the boys weren't really into looking at the camera. My oldest is into saying,"cheese" but then not looking... lovely!
Too much party for the one year old!
Heres what I did:
First I traced t-shirts that fit the boys well. I didn't think through the fact that felt doesn't stretch...thats why the vests don't button all the way down. In the end though I loved the one button look.
After I cut out the back and two fronts I cut strips and laid them out to get a look.
One vest is black on yellow and the other is yellow on black. I cut little stingers out of black felt as well.

I sewed on the stripes using a simple zigzag stitch. I did pin A LOT before sewing to keep them straight.
With a hot glue gun I attached black circles to pipe cleaners, then those to black headbands. You can get a good look at the shape of the stingers below. I also just hot glued the stingers to the back of the vest, spreading the base open so it would stick straight out.

Pumpkin Crunch Cake and Tasty Tuesday Party

I knew as soon as I saw this on FLOUR ME WITH LOVE that I had to make it. I literally made it that same afternoon and it was AMAZING! So easy, you have to try it!
You can find the recipe on her site at the link above...
I made it even easier by using pumpkin pie mix... I was able to leave out the spices and white sugar by doing this.
My first batch was SUPER dry because I forgot to put the butter over top! It was sitting in the micro, where I was melting it. Didn't even remember until we were trying the cake hours later...and I was wondering where all the moisture was! haha! Don't forget the butter. This is a new easy favorite!

Onto to the features for today! Thanks for all the lovely links, I get so many good ideas each week. I was planning on featuring several people, but didnt find any link back to this party.... SO please add me to your party list, thanks!

(I couldn't get the picture from this last post to save to my computer for the collage. Please go check out the yummy treat anyway!)

SYTYC: Fall Colors- Candy Corn "CORN"(tutorial!)

The final vote this week was SO close. I was the bottom by 1 vote! Wow, what a tough and competitive season. I had SO much fun and am so thankful to Missy at SYTYC for the opportunity and all her work this fall. I have next weeks project all done, so I'll share that sometime next week. Thanks to everyone who voted this season. The tutorial for this project is at the bottom of the post
I had a bag of Candy Corn that I had intended to use to make a wreath. There are SO many fabulous wreath ideas out there, wow! Before I got to it I was struck with a moment of inspiration while looking at another fall decoration... Indian Corn. As I was looking at my bunch I was thinking... I could use my candy corn for this and it would be an amazing, unique decoration!

My family was a bit more sceptical when I shared my idea with them, but after I made it they all thought it was great. We love the way it looks hanging on the wall.
I call it: Candy Corn Corn!

Add some fall leaf garland for added effect...

I love the way the top looks like real corn and the way the ribbon brings the whole thing together. I'm not sure how it will store, but this is now a permanent fixture in our fall decorations.
Photobucket My mom brought me two bags of candy corn from the US when she came to visit. I was SO excited to make a wreath, but then I couldn't find anything here to use as the base. As I mentioned above I was inspired to copy the corn (also brought by my mom!) hanging by our table. It was pretty simple...here are a few pictures and the how-to.
Materials needed:
Paper towel rolls
black electric tape
candy corn
brown/tan felt
hot glue
mod podge or clear spray sealant
1. trim tube to desired size for corn
2.cute four evenly spaced slits on one end. Two long and two short, every other one. this will provide more gradual tapering.
 3. Wrap with tape pulling more tight by the slits to narrow the end.
 4. cute felt leaves or varying shapes and sizes.
 5. I prepared a bunch of the leaves in a pile first, then put A LOT of glue inside the tube. Then I stuffed in the bunch of leaves all at once. This should hold most of them, you can always separate a few leaves and add glue between them if necessary.

 6. Using hot glue and starting at the top I worked my way down each row. I put the candy in different directions each row, they fit like triangles together. The bottom candy I put at an angle to create the tip of the corn. (you can see this in the above shot)
Keep going until 3/4th of the towel roll is covered.
I actually only cover 3/4th of the roll, so the back was flat to sit against the wall. This way you don't have to make sure they meet in the back either.
Make sure to enjoy all the broken candy in the bag!
I finished the corn by gluing the three ears together at the felt top and putting a ribbon around. I put a safety pin through the back few felt pieces to hang it by. Hope you have as much fun making Candy Corn: CORN as I did!

Blessings: Fall Bunting

I've been admiring all the lovely fall bunting in blogland. So many amazing ideas! I finally had time to make my own. Here's my version.
I used felt and burlap...and hot glue!
Here are a few of the process pictures.
I wrote the letters with a sharpie and it seemed to work great on the felt.

I laid my twine on the burlap, secured it with a dab of glue, then glued the letter on top.
