Papa's Mac and Cheese and Tasty Tuesday party

Papa's Mac and Cheese
This is my grandpa's great, classic recipe. I make some changes such as skim milk and cheese, but he went full all the way when he made it. YUM! Don't forget to hook up your recipe at the end of this post!
You will need:
3 cups Macaroni
1 med. onion (sauteed)
red pepper (if desired)
10-12 oz (3 cups shredded) American Cheese
Cheddar Cheese
butter, salt, pepper, milk

Cook the Macaroni and do not rinse.
Layer in the dish in two to three layers each layer add American cheese, onion, spices and butter. Fill the dish, on the top add the cheddar cheese.
Add milk until the dish is half full.
Bake at 375 until brown on the top (my favorite part!!!)
1- 11/4 hrs.
I took this picture after the first layer (you can see all the ingredients) then forgot to take one when it was done... We were too hungry!

Flat front shorts...

Using the same basic idea as my flat front pants, I've now been making some shorts. I really like the material for these and am excited how cute they turned out. They were super easy using the MADE pattern. I also attempted a hat this week... needs some more work! I used the basic idea from Sew Much Ado but I didn't print her pattern... just tried to wing it... not a good idea. :o) I need to refine my pattern and try again. Not sure if my son will even wear a hat this summer... he's more into his awesome Thomas the Train sunglasses!

Strawberry Oatmeal Bread with Strawberry Glaze & Tasty Tuesday Party!

Welcome to my first Tasty Tuesday Party!!! I know this is a craft blog, but I also love finding new recipes.... so each Tuesday I hope you will help me by linking up! I'll feature my favorites next week also share a recipe each week that I love. So... lets get started. Heres my contribution this week:
You will need:
1 1/2 C. Flour
1 C. Oatmeal
3/4 C. white sugar
1 1/2 tsp Cinnamon
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
3/4 C. oil (or can sub with applesauce for healthier version)
2 eggs
10 oz strawberries (fresh or frozen)
Preheat oven to 350
Mix all the dry ingredients in a large bowl. In another bowl wisk the eggs and oil. Add too the dry mix. If you use fresh berries, slice and fold them into the mixture. For frozen, I squeezed out the juice, then chopped and added to the mix. I saved the juice for the glaze. Sprinkle the top with oats and bake for 50-60 minutes.
To make the glaze I simply added frosting sugar to my strawberry juice until I liked the consistency. YUM!!!! Set aside until the bread comes out and cools.

Now onto the party!!!

Journals...

A few years ago I bought a journal from this company, they have SO many great ones. Then last year for Christmas I made a few of my own for gifts. I used the basic idea, but different journal prompts for the pages. I liked being able personalize the journal, instead of just buying it. I only wrote out ONE page, then used the copier to make the rest. I made a camping journal, a few hunting journals, and some mothers journals.
More recently... I have a friend who is taking a year off (sabbatical) with her family. They will be doing travel, missions, volunteer work and other very cool, adventurous things. I thought she should have a place to keep tract of all the people and places they encounter over the year. Here is what I made for her birthday.
These are the journal prompts on each page. I also included a clear sleeve every five pages or so to save some physical evidence from the year.

Suncatchers...

For Mothers Day!
I made these several weeks ago and mailed them off to my mom and mother in law. I had to wait until they received them to do this post. Then last week got all busy and blogger was acting up... so I'm getting to it today!
I took some soft wire, glass stones/beads/wooden mobile kit and put together a suncatcher!
I ended up putting some glue on each bead/wire to make sure it was secure as I couldn't get the wire as tight as I would have liked.

I really love how they turned out. Not super easy to mail..but I like it!

Feature Friday- logger birthday party

Something was going on with Blogger yesterday and this didn't post as scheduled. Hopefully it works now..
I am SO excited to share today's feature Friday. My dear friend Kate made incredible food for her sons birthday party, and I get to share the result. I LOVE the cake...she is so talented and makes neat cakes every year for her boys. Enjoy!
Yes, the cake is edible! Except I did cheat by inserting a floral wire into the large free-standing chainsaw handle since there was no way the fondant was going to support its own weight at that thickness. But yes, it is real homemade cake covered with homemade frosting. The cake recipe is from the spring 2002 issue of Martha Stewart Baby.

One-Bowl Chocolate Cake

1 1/2 C. unsweetened cocoa powder

3 C. all-purpose flour

3 C. sugar

1 T. baking soda

1 1/2 t. baking powder

1 1/2 t. salt

3 lrg. eggs

1 1/2 C. warm water

1 1/2 C. buttermilk

3/4 C. vegetable oil

1 1/2 t. pure vanilla extract

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter 9"x13" baking pan (I use the nonstick with flour for baking aerosol spray). Line bottom with parchment paper; butter paper and dust with cocoa powder, tapping out any excess (again I use the spray). Set aside.

2. In a bowl mix together first six ingredients.

3. Add last five ingredients to the flour mixture. Mix on low speed (I use a hand-held electric beater.) until smooth, about 3 minutes.

4. Pour batter into prepped pan. Bake until tester inserted in middle comes out clean and cake springs back when pressed lightly in the center, 40 to 50 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack and let cool 15 minutes before unmolding. Invert onto wire rack and reinvent to prevent splitting. Cool completely before frosting or storing in fridge or freezer.

This is a nice moist, dense cake that holds together well. It is the only recipe I ever use for shaped cakes. It makes a very deep 9"x13" and for this party I got the one-layer small 6" round and the entire chainsaw out of a single recipe. I used a basic buttercream frosting for the crumb coat and mixed up a couple batches of the MM Fondant Icing Recipe , found here http://whatscookingamerica.net/PegW/Fondant.htm
along with lots of tips on how to use the fondant. Fondant is a rolled frosting for those that are unfamiliar to it. It gives cakes that coveted perfectly smooth and flawless finish. It is a dream to work with!

I used pictures of several different chainsaw/log cakes that I found online as inspiration as well as one of my husband's real "live" chainsaws as a model. From there I basically just wing it. My cake creation sessions always extend into the wee hours of the morning and are always accompanied by *high* levels of stress. I never know exactly what the finished product will be but then in less than 24 hours from completion the whole thing gets a knife taken to it, is hacked into squares and everyone eats it so I try to remind myself of that when I'm working on it! In case you're wondering, Malachi let me know that the pics I was working off of were "a lot better" than my finished cake.

Also on the menu:

Venison hot dogs

Homemade vegetarian baked beans

Man Log (mine was a combination of a couple recipes but you can find one here www.bbqaddicts.com/blog/recipes/bacon-explosion/ )

Sesame cheese log ( I used an adaptation of this recipe www.tasteofhome.com/Recipes/Smoky-Sesame-Cheese-Log ) with carrot sticks and broccoli florets

Ants on a log (you know, celery, PB, raisins)

Watermelon & muskmelon

Peanut Butter Logs

Muddy logs ( pretzel rods dipped/rolled in different chocolate varieties and ground flax seed meal)

Fresh-squeezed lemonade

What a happy Birthday boy!

Wow, What a party! I wish I could have been there!
If YOU have a project or recipe that you want to share send it my way. It can be something you are also posting on your blog, or just pictures you took of something.

A hint of pink in a sea of blue...

I live in a world of boys... Three at home (my husband and two sons), and lots and lots of baby boys being born in our community. Over the past two years, with about 15 babies born, only two have been girls! Everyone is having boys! So, when I hear about a little girl on the way, it makes me super excited to make something pink and pretty.
Here's my latest...

This was my first attempt at this zig-zag pattern and I loved how easy it was and the final result.

I've got a GREAT feature Friday this week, so check back!

Paper Flowers- party decor

The Moms group that I attend had a little Mothers Day tea this morning. I made a few decorations last night to add some color to the room. I used the directions from MarthaStewart.com and it was really easy!

The directions say to use 20x 30 paper, but I found that ANY size worked. I made several variations, including using less paper, and they all turned out great. Such a fun and easy little craft. YOU should try it!
